Ultrasound-Assisted Cell Lysis for Automated IVD Workflows

Medical instruments for in-vitro diagnostics (IVD) have become an indispensable part of modern laboratory practice. Highly automated systems analyze samples from the human body, such as blood, urine, or tissue. They detect infectious diseases, cancer, or inflammation, enabling rapid diagnoses and targeted treatment. In IVD analysis processes, sample preparation is a critical step. It must be conducted as precisely, quickly, and contamination-free as possible, preferably directly within the analysis device.

>> Ultrasonic transducers are used as very compact instruments in IVD devices. Using ultrasound, they break up cell structures completely without contact and, therefore, without contamination. Cell compartments such as DNA are released from blood or other body cells and analyzed directly, e.g. when checking for foreign DNA in the context of virus detection. Furthermore, ultrasonic instruments allow efficient and rapid mixing of samples in analytical instruments and microfluidic units for IVD.

The >> ultrasonic transducers for liquid handling applications generate powerful vibrations in the range of several 10 kHz. With a comparatively low energy consumption, they are particularly suitable for use in stationary medical devices as well as mobile point-of-care solutions, but can also support other medical applications.
