Ultrasonic Piezomotors

PILine®: Fast and Compact Direct Drive

 

Ceramic piezomotor direct drives dispense with the mechanical components of classic motor spindle-based drive systems such as clutch or gearhead to the benefit of costs and reliability. These components can be very susceptible to wear, especially in miniaturized systems.

An integral part of the PILine® ultrasonic piezomotors is a piezoceramic actuator that is pretensioned against a movably guided runner via a coupling element.

The piezo actuator is excited to high-frequency oscillations that cause the runner to move. This drive principle allows a highly dynamic start and stop behavior and speeds of up to several 100 mm/s.

Piezomotors are Self-Locking

Preloading the piezoceramic actuators against the runner ensures self-locking of the drive when at rest and powered down. As a result, it does not consume any power, does not heat up, and keeps the position mechanically stable.

Applications with a low duty cycle that are battery-operated or heat-sensitive benefit from these characteristics.

The great advantage of the low height of PILine® drives becomes obvious in positioning systems such as the rotary stage, only 14 mm in height, or the microscopic XY stage, 25 mm in height, from PI (Physik Instrumente): Its low profile has no lead screw ducts or flange-mounted motors.
