During the Adaptronic Congress 23
and 24 March 2007, the DLR (German
Aerospace Center), INVENT GmbH
and PI GmbH & Co. KG signed a
cooperation agreement for focusing
their know-how on the acclaimed
DuraAct™ transducer. PI Ceramic will
provide the piezoceramics and take
delivery of all units in an exclusive
marketing arrangement.

The reliability of multilayer piezoelectric actuators is an important issue for the extension of their use. Two different operating conditions have to be distinguished:
AC-operation (dynamic) and DC operation (static). The paper explains DC- and AC-degradation mechanisms as well as the unique design of the PI Ceramic PICMA cofired
actuators.

The EU "Restriction of Hazardous Substances" (RoHS) Directive 2002/95/EC, which was translated into German law by the “ElektroG” statute (Elektro- and Elektronikgerätegesetz), aims at promoting health and environmental protection.
At PI, conversion to RoHS-compliant products is proceeding rapidly to meet the deadline. Even though the progress of RoHS implementation depends to a high degree on our suppliers, we plan to deliver RoHS-compatible products from the beginning of 2006.

PI (Physik Instrumente) L.P. was honored with the Photonics Circle of Excellence Award at a dinner in San Jose, California, during 2005 Photonics West.
PI received the award for its innovative PICMA® nanopositioning actuators, the worlds first all-ceramic multilayer piezo actuators. PICMA®s novel cofired ceramic encapsulation resists humidity orders of magnitude better than traditional polymer coatings. Inherently vacuum-compatible, its flat, hard surface is ideal for sensors. PIs blank-sheet approach optimizes stiffness, capacitance, thermal dynamics, electrode configuration and other parameters. Consequently, PICMA® improves performance and reliability in all environments and is measurably superior in high-duty/high-endurance situations. Increased Curie temperature of 320°C facilitates operation in hotter environments with higher dynamics.
PICMA® is now offered to OEMs and is the foundation for PIs fast nanopositioners and optic mounts, benefiting applications throughout semiconductors, data storage, photonics, microscopy, life sciences, aerospace and other high-tech fields.
The Photonics Circle of Excellence Award is bestowed annually on the 25 most technically innovative new products of the year, based upon a peer review by members of the Photonics Spectra Magazine editorial advisory board, a panel of recognized experts in the industry.
